HISTORY
The Parish of the Holy Child Jesus, the Good Shepherd, Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) is located at Lubiran Street, Bacood, Sta. Mesa (formerly a district of Sampaloc), Manila. It is located in the eastern part of the City of Manila.
Bacood then has only two streets of entrance. Coming from Sta. Mesa, the point of entry is the northern portion of Bacood, called Bacood Park in Cordeleria Street a very short street (named after the abaca cord maker company located on that street during those days). It is connected to a much longer street named Lubiran Street (a street where the factory and warehouse of rolls of rope made from abaca fibers to be used for ships) to connect the whole Bacood Street in the heart of mainland Bacood. Both Cordeleria and Lubiran streets were derived from Abaca Cord and Lubid Makers and a warehouse company.
The other one is located in eastern part which is the Bagumbayan Street, an entrance from Pasig, San Juan and Mandaluyong areas.
At present, the new entrance is the Lubiran Bridge connecting New Panaderos Street in Punta, Sta. Ana, Manila and Gregorio Aglipay Street (formerly Blumentritt) connecting Boni Avenue, Mandaluyong up to Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA).
In the beginning, Bacood was a community of mostly members of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente or Aglipayans. There were few members of the Roman Catholic Church but after the Second World War they multiplied. The people came from Pandacan, Mandaluyong and other provinces like Bulacan. Laguna and Pampanga. The people rented a parcel of land with Php 2.50 per month which was “owned” by the Tuazon family.
Bacood was an agricultural land. The people had engaged in backyard farming which they installed bamboo fences around the farm and the people called it, Bacuod. Other people had engaged in fishing at the Pasig river.

In 1930s, as a community of Aglipayans, an IFI priest from Mandaluyong parish started the celebration of the Mass at Bacood under a makeshift made of bamboos and banana leaves. That was held in Damayan street at the house of Luis Palmado.
They celebrated a barrio fiesta in the month of January in honor of the Holy Child Jesus Christ. The image of the Holy Child being used was provided by IFI Pandacan parish which the people brought it through the Pasig river, using a “kasko” or “gibara”. The fiesta was a celebration of the whole community including the members of the Roman Catholic Church.
1930sDuring the Second World War, Manila was declared as “Open City” (no hostile forces) and when the Japanese forces entered Manila, there was no encounter happened. Bacood was more fortunate than other places because though the Japanese were strict, Bacood was not subjected to “military zoning, burning and raid.” But the people had suffered hardships. They stopped in planting. However, their lives were sustained with boxes of canned goods, sacks of wheat, rolls of papers, medicines, perfumes and others stored in the warehouse of the Philippine Manufacturing Corporation located at Lubiran street which was opened and the people of Bacood enjoyed these goods for survival. In 1945, US forces entered Manila. The city was destroyed because the US forces bombed Manila. There were big holes along Lubiran and Bacood streets and the people used the underneath of houses as pathways.
1930s -
After the Second World War, the land area of Bacood was being administered by Hoskin Real Estate and it developed the Revirside Subdivision. The farmland was sub-divided into many ”housing lots” with Php 7.00 per square meter for Bacood residents payable within 15 to 20 years. Many poor residents who cannot afford to buy a parcel of land had transferred to other places. Many Roman Catholic Church members from other places had acquired lots in Bacood.
Because of that condition, the Mass which was used to be held in a community was held in different houses of the IFI members in Bacood.

A certain Fr. Arturo del Rosario who was a resident of Bacood started the organizing of the IFI parish in Bacood in the middle of 1953. The image of the Holy Child as a Patron was provided by Luis Palmado. The leaders were Benito Federigan, Segundo Cayanan, Arcadio Resurreccion, Florencio Sanicasio, Teodoro Basas, Eleuterio Bautista, Juliano Macapagal, Pelagio Valencia, Adriano Cruz, Juancho Bautista, Antonio Valenzuela, Miguel Ignacio, Cayetano Dominguez, Segundo Dominguez, Exiquiel Ignacio, Patricio Teodoro, and Lucio Teodoro.
The other active laymen were Deogracias Agustin, Candido Larion, Amado Cruz, Eulogio Aranas, Candido Larion and Felomeno Cayetano.
The active church women before a formal organization were Cecilia Macapagal, Cleofe Basas, Francisca Larion, Arcenia Alejandro, Luciana G. Resurreccion and Luciana S. Resurreccion.
1953 -
Like what had happened to other IFI congregations, the Aglipayans in Bacood were also shaken with misunderstandings and conflicts. Luis Palmado had withdrew his support and he brought with him the image of the Holy Child.
Those who remained with the IFI continued to serve the parish. They acquired a lot where the church now is standing. The fund being used to purchase the lot and a building which was made of wood were the contributions of the members. Benito Federigan, Miguel Ignacio and Eleuterio Bautista initiated the collection of contributions to build a church-building along the Lubiran St. Antonio Valenzuela led the construction of the Church.
The church bell was donated by the Roman Gervacio and family. The identity of the congregation is the Church of Holy Child of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente.

During the parish inauguration in May 1954, the Santo Nino de Buen Pastor became the Patron. It which was acquired by Dr. Adriano Cruz. Msgr. Diosdao Vidal of IFI Mandaluyong parish was the assigned priest. The fiesta was usually celebrated on the third Sunday of May. Avelino Dimag led the “Pagoda de Ilog” which had started at Bagumbayan and ended at Bacood in which the procession followed returning to the Church. The Roman Catholic Church held its fiesta celebration on the Second Sunday of May. Because of the “rainy” seasons, the fiesta celebration of the IFI was transferred to the first Sunday of May.
1954 -
The Deed of Donation of the Land was officially turned over to Obispo Maximo Isabelo de los Reyes, Jr. on March 6, 1960.
On May 15, 1960, Revd Fr. Bayani Arieta was assigned as permanent parish priest.
The additional active laymen at that period were Reynaldo Ignacio, Edmond Yaneza, Romulo Macapagal, Conrado Peña, Policarpio Petre, Eleuterio Dominguez, Luis Sison, Leonardo Sison, Antonio Ramirez, Perfecto Manlapaz and Talit Pagelazon.
The “Hijas de Maria” were Anastacia Suson, Marcela de Castro, Maria Cruz, Celestina Aranas, Purification Umlas, and others.
1960 -
In July 1964, a meeting of the Diocese of Manila was held. The delegates from Bacood parish were Benito Federigan, Angelina Tayo, Modesta Pagelason and Crispina Segura. That meeting inspired them to organize the Women’s Auxiliary.
On July 26, 1964, the women organization of the parish of Bacood was organized. The officers were Seoflinda Cruz- president, Dolores Agustin – vice president, Crispina Segura – secretary, Angelina Tayo – assistant secretary, Marcela de Castro – treasurer, Candida Manlapaz- assistant treasurer, and Anastacia suson – Auditor.
The founding members were Carolina Antonio, Laurentina Antonio, Aurora Aranas, Beatris Aranas, Lureana Balitbit, Aurea Bautista, Felisa Bayani, Ma. Cleofe Basas, Teofila Bernardo, Diosdada Bragais, Flora Aguatis, Rosalina Conde, Maria S. Cruz, Dra. Patnubay E. Cruz, Epifania Dalisay, Milagros Dugenia, Felisa Dimag, Nora Falaria, Celedonia Federigan, Lucila Fernando, Beatirs Flores and Aurora Fuller.
The additional members were Ester Cajulis, Irene Macapagal, Florida dela Cruz, Lourdes Ignacio, Felipa Antonio, Antonia Antonio and Eying Almazan.
1960s -
Every year, the women have been holding an anniversary of the organization. Songs and poems attributed to the women’s organization were composed and presented. They had chosen among themselves “queen and princesses” every year of celebration.
The first Choir of the Parish was organized by Leticia Basas, Nena Ramirez, Salud Espardinez, Felizardo Aranas, Aurora Aranas (organist) and Glicerio Resurreccion (Guitarist).
The Youth Group in 1960s were Laura Teodoro, Salud de Castro, Carling Fontanilla, willy Gualberto, Fely Aranas, Luming Sison, Lolit Navarro, Kalayaan Suson, Zosima Suson, Dolores Mangaran and others.
In 1964, the Philippine Independent Church Youth Organization of Bacood was organized by Fr. Abraham Bautista. The officers were Manuel Nicolas – president, Filomena Segura Gonzales – vice president, Lilia Cruz – secretary, Eugenia de Castro Luna – treasurer, Melchora Tomas – assistant treasurer, and Soledad Petre – auditor. Its project was the monstrance of the Church.

On May 8, 1969. IFI Bacood parish participated in the inauguration of the National Cathedral at Taft Avenue, Ermita, Manila. In 1969, the Diocese of Manila hosted a Basketball Tournament which Bacood Parish also participated.
1969 -
In 1970s, the Choir was composed of Crispina Segura, Salud Espardines, Teofila Bernardo, Lolit Navarro, Nida Aranas, Eleanor Federigan, Amelia Dugenia, Cynthia Policarpio, Dolly Manlapaz, Lilit Manlapaz, Modesta Pagelason and Seoflinda Cruz.
The Choir was sustained by the young people until at present. However, in 2016 there was a conflict among them which has not been resolved even today.
Now, there are two groups of choir that serve the parish which “cannot jointly sing in harmony”. Nevertheless, the “Morning Choir” is led by Roxanne Fajardo as organist and the organist of the “Evening Choir” is Louie Gene Aquilar.
1970s -
In November 1981, Avelino Dimag started the organizing of the Good Shepherd Youth Club (GSYC). Reynaldo S. Resurreccion was appointed youth president by Dimag.
On December 13, 1981, the GSYC held an assembly and elected its officers: Reynaldo S. Resurreccion – president, Maria Mercedes Larion – vice president, Merla Ardales – secretary, Josie Larion – assistant secretary, Lilia Larion – treasurer, and Abey Almazan – auditor.
1981 -
In 1985, with the leadership of Dalisay Manlapaz, the GSYC was transformed into an organization, the Good Shepherd Youth Organization (GSYO). The GSYO officers and members were active in parish activities and even in the diocesan and national affairs. In fact, one of the national presidents of the National Youth Organization (NYO-PIC) was Gloria Teodoro, a leader of GSYO.
In 1980s, the Parish was also opened in receiving seminarians from St. Andrew’s Theological Seminary of Quezon City. One of the seminarians was the late Bro. Larry Luces. With the help of the active youth leaders, Bro. Larry Luces initiated a Bible Study in the parish and later on that series of Bible Study was held in different home of the members.
The Parish church was opened in several times as “Patak Center” of the Department of Health through the Bacood Health Center. There were times that the parish Church had been used as a venue for the meetings of the workers.
1985 -
In 1990, there was an established worshipping IFI community in Brgy 615 along the railways of Sta. Mesa. Reynaldo S. Resurreccion helped organize that worshipping community. At that time, the youth leaders of the NYO-PIC and other progressive youth leaders had conducted medical missions in that worshipping community. It was however abandoned by the succeeding priest.
1990 -
In 1992, when the diocese formulated its vision, mission and goals and produced the Mission 2002 program, the IFI Bacood parish responded positively.
One of the programs of Mission 2002 Program was the Lay Ministry Formation. The first batch of Lay Ministers in the Parish were the present Parish Council vice-chairperson, Reynaldo Resurreccion and Parish Council auditor, Hercules Asido, the late Jose Larion and Celso Clariza, Later on, Maximo Enriquez, Leonila Zamora, the late Purification Umlas and Modesta Alojado were commissioned as Lay Ministers. At present, only Leonila Zamora is serving at the altar.
The Altar servers (sacristans) were also active throughout the years, they are Filomeno Fernando, Edgardo Aranas, Manding Aranas, Generoso Segura, Jose Dominguez, Victor Resurreccion, Ador Federigan, Nanding Bautista, Lito Reguya, Edward Astorga, Rod Ryan Perez, Reynald Palma, Warren Sitjar, Albert Lorenz Aranas, Nyl Albert Aranas and Odlanyer Palma. At present, there are sometimes 4, sometimes 5 and sometime 6 serving at the altar. They are Emanuel John and Maria Sofia Rosales, Elijahmarie and Ezekiel Guiao, Princess Anthea Alesna and Nico Turaray
1992 -
There was also a time that the Sunday School in the Parish was opened for IFI children. It was the time of Mrs. Cornelia Fabito, a wife of one of the priests who served the IFI Bacood parish. She was assisted by Carol Teodoro, Eline Fontanilla, Luwalhati Manlapaz, Gloria Teodoro, Merla Resurrection, Dalisay Manlapaz. The resources for Sunday School were donations from the families of the Parish. The program was stopped in the 2000s and had not recovered until now.

Problems cannot be avoided. In 2016, the parish administration was placed under the leadership of now Msgr. Emmanuel Ballesteros with Adhoc Council of 21 people. The meetings are not regular. At that time, the sectoral organizations have no regular officers. In July 2016, a permanent parish priest was assigned.
There were few people who were appointed as temporary officers until October 30, 2016, when the WOPIC and LIFI elected each organization a set of officers. The WOPIC has 52 members and the officers are: President - Nerissa de Guzman; Vice-presindent – Merlita Jordan; Secretary – Leonila Jordan; Treasurer – Suelei Mendoza; Auditor – Genel Larion. The LIFI has 54 members and the officers are: President - Raul Jordan; Vice-president – Carlo Macapagal; Secretary – Emmanuel Mendoza; Treasurer – Manuel de Guzman. The youth was last to be organized in which the officers are Loarreane Aranas – president, Gabrielle Aranas – vice president, Jemari Tria – secretary-treasurer and Rainier Jhon Jordan– Auditor.
2016 -
The congregation of the Parish was subdivided into cluster for better coordination and participation in feast days and other celebrations. These are the Lubiran Cluster, Damayan Cluster, Salamisim Cluster, Lakas Cluster. Bacood 1 Cluster, Bacood 2 Cluster, Makisig Cluster, and Valenzuela Cluster. Each cluster serves as sponsoring group during Misa de Gallo, Novena for fiesta celebrations and station of the Cross during Holy Week.
The active participation of the Parish Council is very important. At present, the parish council members though not all are active, have contributed a lot in decision-making. They are Reynaldo S. Resurreccion, Carlo Macapagal, Hercules Asido, Nerissa de Guzman, Merlita “Beck” Jordan, Anita, Garcia, Jemari Tria, Loreanne Aranas and Gabrielle Aranas.

In 2017, the Parish through the Parish Priest and some leaders established working relations with the Bacood Roman Catholic Fatima Parish. The concrete expression is the joint procession of the image of the Jesus the Nazarene before the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo every January.
As permanently done since 1960, Bacood Parish also celebrates the Feast of the Santo Nino every third Sunday of January. In 2017, an image of the Santo Nino was acquired through the effort of the family of the late Engr. Allan Aranas so that the image of the Holy Child Jesus, the Good Shepherd will be strictly devoted to the Feast of the Good Shepherd which is celebrated every first Sunday of May.
2017 -
During the celebrations, the efforts of the Bacood Laymen of IFI, are of big help including the sourcing of funds to be used for the decorations and the hiring of the bands. In May 2019, Engr. Lorenz Larion shouldered the amount needed for the Drum and Bugle.
On the aspect for the “decoration” of the parish Church, the Aranas siblings (Albert Lorenz, Nyl Albert and Loreanne) are the main actors. They are offering their talents for decorating the needed parts, instruments and equipment’s for joyful celebrations participated by the members and friends of the parish. Sometimes, the services of Genel Larion to help in the decoration were sought.
The development of the Church building was improved through the years. In 1980s, Mario Fernando led the major renovation of the Altar using the marble materials. In 2016, major renovations of the Church were made. It started from the repair of the Rectory, then the changed of the Roof, the renovation of the Choir Loft, Ceiling including the lightings and the Altar. In 2019, new pews and new “carosa” were acquired. All of these recent developments were made possible through the efforts and leadership of Niña Jordan and her brothers and sisters in cooperation with some IFI members who can afford to give more for the Church.
The last to be special mentioned is the de Guzman couple (Manuel Jr. and Nerissa) who serve the Parish with full enthusiasm and commitment including in the maintenance of cleanliness of the parish building. Sometimes, they serve for and in behalf of the parish priest without compensation. They were assisted by Jordan couple (Raul and Merlita or Beck) and Virginia O. Larion.
2019
This history is written based on the fragmented accounts written by the late Crispina Gervacio Segura with the help of Dr. Rey Ignacio, Leonila Segura and Nerissa de Guzman, who had served God and Country through the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, Bacood Parish.
May this history inspires the people of Bacood and they themselves will continue to write the IFI Bacood history with their love, care and dedication to serve God and His people.
